What is spatial computing?

Spatial computing refers to technologies that understand and interact with the physical world in 3D space. It allows digital content to be placed, manipulated, and experienced in real-world environments using AR and mixed reality devices like the Apple Vision Pro. With spatial computing, computers recognize objects, surfaces, and user movements, enabling immersive and interactive experiences.

What is the difference between AR, MR and VR?

All these three expressions mean to display digital content in relation to the real world. Augmented Reality (AR) especially means enhancing the world, the real environment is shown all the time and digital content is displayed within and upon it. Virtual Reality (VR) means a whole environment just digitally. You won't see the real world anymore but immersed in a completely different environment. Mixed Reality (MR) blends the real and virtual worlds, allowing digital objects to interact with the physical environment in real time. Where the borders of Augmented and Virtual Reality fade, the term Extended Reality (XR) is often used.

How does AR work?

Augmented reality applications usually work with an interaction of two systems. The tracking engine scans the room for fixed points using the camera, gyroscope and/or scanners such as LiDAR to identify the ground and depth. The rendering engine takes this spatial data to render an accurate fit image of the 3D asset in relation to the space and camera. Since this process requires special technology and processing power, only newer mobile devices are capable of AR.

Are there limitations?

As with any new technology, augmented reality has technical hurdles that can only be overcome in the future. But there is already much more possible than most can imagine. Face-, hand- and body-tracking, geo-positioning and the exact alignment to buildings, machine learning, haptic feedback, interactions with digital elements, displaying people in AR... And these are just a few examples. When in doubt, we at Scenery can make a lot possible. That's why we encourage users to think not from the technical possibilities, but from the story they want to tell. This is how new, unique experiences are created that can be implemented in most cases.

What is WebAR?

Web-based augmented reality is the browser-based representation of augmented reality. It works platform independent, but some technical basics have to be given for the mobile device. Scenery supports this today in beta through its WebXR Viewer – immersive AR on Android Chrome and an interactive 3D preview on desktop. Functionality can still be more limited than the native iOS app.

How do I create experiences for Apple's Vision Pro?

Create AR for Apple's headset easily with the Scenery Editor. Upload custom 3D models, add interactions or events and publish the whole scene on scenery. The Scenery app for playing the experiences is available on AppStore.

What does Scenery feature?

Scenery packs in far more than you might first expect – app-less experiences via App Clips, Apple Vision Pro support, visual positioning, baked USDZ animations, world-anchored walks, spatial audio, haptics, and Android/web playback via WebXR.

What devices can I use Scenery on?

The Editor is downloadable to macOS and iPadOS. Bringing a whole new and intuitive possibility to design and visualize AR our new editor offers user-centered solutions to most AR creation wishes.

Scenery's player mode enables us to view AR in our iOS-based app that runs on Apple's iPhones and iPads. Playback requires iOS / iPadOS 18 or later (devices with the A12 chip and newer). Optimally, tracking works with a LiDAR scanner.

Experiences created with Scenery are available on Apple Vision Pro.

Android and the web are supported in beta via the WebXR Viewer – immersive AR in Android Chrome and an interactive 3D preview on desktop.

What is a USDZ file?

The .usdz file format was originally developed by Pixar to reliably share animated 3D scenes between various collaborators. Apple uses this file format and has extended it to make it usable for AR applications.
A .usdz file contains not only the 3D model, textures and animations compared to .gltf files. It can also contain interactions, behaviours, sounds and timings.

What anchors can I use?

Scenery offers a broad variety of anchors – planes, images, location / visual positioning, camera, face, hand, and more – and they can be combined, mixing for example a location-based experience with additional image markers.

What is an App Clip?

One of AR's biggest challenges is the app-less accessibility of content. You have the option to easily distribute your experiences with a simple link, QR code (App Clip) or NFC tag that can be opened without an app download. Get in touch with us if you are interested.

Can I use my own branding?

Branding options are possible at Scenery to various extents. From the placement of logos and use of corporate colours to the app free use of individual experiences without Scavengar download, almost anything is possible. Just contact us!

What Platforms are supported?

iOS (iPhone and iPad): Since Scenery is an Apple ecosystem native app all experiences run on iOS. They can be shared via AppClip so no app-download is needed to view experiences.

Android & Web: Supported in beta through the WebXR Viewer – immersive AR in Android Chrome and an interactive 3D preview on desktop.

Apple Vision Pro: Scenery Experiences are accessible on Apple Vision Pro.

Is Scenery an Adobe Aero Alternative?

With the cancellation of Adobe Aero many creators are looking for an alternative. And we hear you. Luckily Scenery already covers most features of Adobe Aero. There are some steps though to undertake to bring your Aero experiences into Scenery.

How does Aero Migration work?

For now you should start with zipping up your Aero .real files. You can convert most of your 3D glb files into usdz (f.e. with Apples Reality Converter) and rebuild the experience in Scenery. Videos need to be saved as mp4.

What are the licensing models?

Licensing depends on the number of seats and how experiences are used. Scenery comes in Free, Pro, and Agency tiers.

Pro unlocks most features – App Clip sharing (no app download), templates, and unlimited experiences. Agency adds commercial use, full branding, custom materials and shaders, coding interfaces, and custom branded App Clips.

Scenery is also well suited to education – we're always happy to discuss student and education-related projects.
